Government starts to accept payment through Apple and Google Pay for online services

Published 7 May 2019

From:
Disclosure and Barring Service

Basic check applicants that apply directly to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) are now able to pay for their check using Apple or Google Pay.

The introduction of this option will make the process easier and more secure for users, as transactions can be approved with fingerprints or facial recognition.

Minister for Implementation, Oliver Dowden, said:

“We’re focused on making access to government services as easy as possible and introducing mobile payment to GOV.UK Pay will also make transactions more secure.”

“This is another good example of how we are working smarter as a government, improving services for people, as well as reducing fraud and costs.”

DBS’ online basic check service was one of the first to trial Apple and Google Pay alongside three other services, which are detailed in the Cabinet Office’s press release, here.

Lead product manager for GOV.UK Pay, Till Worth, said:

“Allowing people to pay for Government services through Apple Pay and Google Pay means they won’t have to enter their credit or debit card information when making payments. This innovation will increase the convenience and security of GOV.UK Pay for users and hopefully make their experience online a lot easier.”

NHS Digital welcomes RCGP tech manifesto

News from NHS Digital website:

NHS Digital has welcomed the publishing of the Royal College  of GP’s tech manifesto today.

Wendy Clark, Executive Director of Product Development at NHS Digital, said: “We welcome the RCGP’s tech manifesto and support its key messages. Our strong working relationship with the RCGP and other royal colleges is absolutely crucial to us in delivering the technology that GP practices need and deserve.

“NHS Digital has a shared passion for realising the potential of digital transformation, and we are enthusiastic about working together to deliver the manifesto.”

Nic Fox, NHS Digital’s Director of Primary Care Technology, said: “NHS Digital will continue to be at the forefront of supporting the digital modernisation in GP practices, which will be of huge benefit to doctors and their patients.

“Practices need systems that are modern, resilient, support efficient working, and are truly interoperable.

“The GP IT Futures framework which will be available from later this year will put in place standards that will greatly improve the seamless sharing of patient information between care setting, which will free up valuable clinical time for patient care and ensure that critical information is available to clinicians.

“It will provide General Practice with a real choice of systems and make switching, or adding new digital products to their existing estates, more simple.”

“We understand the absolute importance of systems that are reliable and resilient – it’s something the NHS has achieved at the centre with systems like Spine and the Summary Care Record, and this will continue to be a key feature of the new GP IT Framework to ensure GP systems are robust and performant.

“GPs need systems that are data-rich so they have the full picture on their patients’ interactions with secondary, community and social care. They need data flowing easily from monitoring devices that comes to them in a format that is practical and useful, not more burdensome.
