Government Digital Service have announced today, via their blog, an updated Service Standard for government services. The Service Standard helps teams to create and run great public services.

All public facing transactional services must meet the standard, which is used by departments and the Government Digital Service to check whether a service is good enough for public use.

The new Service Standard, which comes in to force at the end of June 2019:

1 Understand users and their needs
2 Solve a whole problem for users
3 Provide a joined up experience across all channels
4 Make the service simple to use
5 Make sure everyone can use the service
6 Have a multi-disciplinary team
7 Use agile ways of working
8 Iterate and improve frequently
9 Create a secure service which protects users’ privacy
10 Define what success looks like and publish performance data
11 Choose the right tools and technology
12 Make new source code open
13 Use and contribute to common standards, components and patterns
14 Operate a reliable service

NHS Digital has welcomed the publishing of the Royal College  of GP’s tech manifesto today.

Wendy Clark, Executive Director of Product Development at NHS Digital, said: “We welcome the RCGP’s tech manifesto and support its key messages. Our strong working relationship with the RCGP and other royal colleges is absolutely crucial to us in delivering the technology that GP practices need and deserve.

“NHS Digital has a shared passion for realising the potential of digital transformation, and we are enthusiastic about working together to deliver the manifesto.”

Nic Fox, NHS Digital’s Director of Primary Care Technology, said: “NHS Digital will continue to be at the forefront of supporting the digital modernisation in GP practices, which will be of huge benefit to doctors and their patients.

“Practices need systems that are modern, resilient, support efficient working, and are truly interoperable.

“The GP IT Futures framework which will be available from later this year will put in place standards that will greatly improve the seamless sharing of patient information between care setting, which will free up valuable clinical time for patient care and ensure that critical information is available to clinicians.

“It will provide General Practice with a real choice of systems and make switching, or adding new digital products to their existing estates, more simple.”

“We understand the absolute importance of systems that are reliable and resilient – it’s something the NHS has achieved at the centre with systems like Spine and the Summary Care Record, and this will continue to be a key feature of the new GP IT Framework to ensure GP systems are robust and performant.

“GPs need systems that are data-rich so they have the full picture on their patients’ interactions with secondary, community and social care. They need data flowing easily from monitoring devices that comes to them in a format that is practical and useful, not more burdensome.
